The subtitle is Indonesia and the Birth of the Modern World, and the creator is David van Reybrouck. A wonderful ebook, and I discovered two factors of specific curiosity in it. First, simply how weak and incomplete was the Dutch colonization of Indonesia for hundreds of years. Second, simply how difficult and quickly altering was the postwar transition from Japanese rule to independence. Excerpt:
In whole no fewer than 120,000 Dutch conscripts would depart between 1946 and 1949, an infinite quantity that approached the overall mobilization earlier than World Battle II (150,000). Six thousand recruits who had been examined and judged ‘match for the tropics’ refused to embark. Lots of tthese had been tracked down and hauled out of beds to the navy police. This hunt for deserters went on till 1958! Strict sentences had been handed on 2,565 struggle resisters. Nearly three-quarters obtained custodial sentences of as much as two years, the remainder stay in jail even longer. Altogether a complete of fifteen centuries of jail sentences had been pronounced, a remarkably great amount in comparison with the entire immunity granted to later struggle criminals. The conclusion was clear: those that refused to kill had been locked up, those that murdered with out purpose went free.
Really useful, there ought to in fact be extra such books on Indonesia.
